UNS S32205 Duplex F60 Weldolets offer outstanding performance in harsh environments, such as offshore oil platforms and chemical plants. While Weldolets follow MSS SP-97 for branch connections, we align our production with ASME B16.11 standards for material, pressure ratings, and tolerances to ensure top quality.
This article explains the forging steps, dimensional specs, and why our Weldolets stand out.

Why Choose UNS S32205 (F60) for Weldolets
A Weldolet is a type of olet fitting-a reinforced branch connection that allows a smaller pipe to be welded at a 90-degree angle to a larger "run" pipe. Its contoured design ensures a smooth, turbulence-minimizing transition, reducing stress concentration and providing integral reinforcement to the header pipe.
While weldolets come in various materials, Duplex Stainless Steel UNS S32205, designated as Grade F60 under ASTM A182, represents the optimal balance of properties for severe service. Its microstructure, comprising roughly equal parts austenite and ferrite, grants it a distinct advantage:
Exceptional Strength & Corrosion Resistance: It delivers nearly double the yield strength of standard 316 stainless steel alongside outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.
Optimized Chemistry: UNS S32205 is a controlled-chemistry version within the 2205 duplex family. Compared to S31803, it typically guarantees higher minimum levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, directly enhancing its pitting resistance (PREN > 34).
Proven Performance: This combination makes it the workhorse alloy for the most challenging applications in oil and gas, chemical processing, pulp and paper, and marine environments.
S32205 Weldolets Forging Process

1. Material Selection & Preparation
We start with certified ASTM A182 F60 material, with full traceability and Mill Test Certificates (MTC) verifying compliance with the chemical and mechanical property ranges.
Raw material (typically round bar) is precisely cut to a calculated weight to ensure sufficient volume for the forging without excessive waste.
2. Heating and Forging
The billet is heated uniformly in a temperature-controlled furnace to the forging range of 1150°C - 1200°C (2100°F - 2200°F).
Hot forging is performed using precision dies. This step is crucial: it must be completed while the material is above 950°C (1740°F) to avoid cracking and to ensure proper metal flow into the complex weldolet shape, which includes the base (to match the run pipe) and the reinforced branch outlet.
3. Solution Annealing and Quenching
Post-forging, the fitting undergoes solution annealing at 1020°C - 1100°C (1870°F - 2010°F). This critical step dissolves any detrimental intermetallic phases (like sigma phase) that may have formed and restores the optimal 50/50 ferrite-austenite balance.
Immediately after annealing, the component is rapidly quenched in water. This fast cooling "freezes" the desired microstructure, ensuring maximum corrosion resistance and toughness.

4. Machining and Finishing
The annealed forging is precision machined on CNC lathes and machining centers.
All weld bevels (on the run pipe base and branch outlet) are machined to the exact angles and tolerances specified by the customer or standard (e.g., ASME B16.25).
The fitting is finished to the specified surface condition, which is vital for corrosion resistance in duplex steels.
5. Quality Verification and Testing
Every batch undergoes 100% dimensional inspection against ASME B16.11 and MSS SP-97 requirements.
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), such as Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), is performed to ensure surface integrity.
Positive Material Identification (PMI) using an XRF analyzer verifies the alloy composition at critical points.
Final documentation, including a EN 10204 3.1 Material Certificate and applicable NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 certifications for sour service, is provided.
