Hastelloy C2000 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy developed by Haynes International as an advanced evolution of the widely used Hastelloy C276.

Hastelloy C2000 Composition

Introduced in the late 1990s, C2000 was specifically engineered to combine the superior resistance of C276 to reducing environments with dramatically improved resistance to oxidizing media, including ferric ions, cupric ions, and strong oxidants such as nitric acid and hydrochloric acid mixtures.

Hastelloy C2000 Chemical Composition

The nominal chemical composition of Hastelloy C2000 (as per ASTM B575, B564, B366, and B462) is presented below:

Element

Weight % (Nominal)

Typical Range (Actual)

Purpose & Effect

Nickel (Ni)

Balance

Remainder

Primary matrix element; provides base corrosion resistance and ductility

Chromium (Cr)

23.0

22.0 – 24.0

Enhances resistance to oxidizing environments and localized corrosion (pitting/crevice)

Molybdenum (Mo)

16.0

15.0 – 17.0

Major contributor to resistance in reducing acids (HCl, H₂SO₄) and pitting resistance

Copper (Cu)

1.6

1.3 – 1.9

Unique addition that significantly improves resistance to sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, especially in oxidizing impurities

Iron (Fe)

≤3.0

Kept low to maintain corrosion performance

Cobalt (Co)

≤2.0

≤1.0 typical

Limited to reduce risk of phase instability

Manganese (Mn)

≤0.50

≤0.30 typical

Deoxidizer and machinability aid

Silicon (Si)

≤0.08

≤0.05 typical

Strictly limited to prevent deleterious silicide formation

Carbon (C)

≤0.010

≤0.008 typical

Ultra-low to avoid sensitization and intergranular corrosion

Phosphorus (P)

≤0.025

≤0.015 typical

Controlled to minimize hot cracking and embrittlement

Sulfur (S)

≤0.010

≤0.005 typical

Extremely low to enhance weldability and corrosion resistance

Aluminum (Al)

≤0.50

≤0.20 typical

Limited; excess can form detrimental phases

Hastelloy C2000 vs C276: Difference

Hastelloy C2000 vs C276

Higher Chromium: Dramatically improves resistance to oxidizing species such as Fe³, Cu², and nitric acid.

Addition of Copper: A deliberate and patented addition that synergistically enhances performance in sulfuric acid and HCl-containing environments with oxidizing contaminants. This is the most distinguishing feature of C2000.

Higher Molybdenum: Maintains excellent resistance to reducing acids while supporting pitting and crevice corrosion resistance.

Ultra-low Carbon and Silicon: Ensures thermal stability and resistance to intergranular attack even after prolonged exposure in the 600–1000°C range.

Resulting Corrosion Performance

Virtually immune in hydrochloric acid up to 70 °C at all concentrations.

Excellent resistance in sulfuric acid up to 80 °C, even with oxidizing impurities.

Superior performance in wet chlorine, hypochlorite, and chlorine dioxide.

Outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater and brine.
