It also performs well in hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, and alkaline solutions. However, it is important to note that in the age-hardened condition, the alloy may be susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking in certain specific environments. Therefore, environment-specific testing is recommended for critical applications involving high tensile stresses.
2. Mechanical Strength
The defining feature of K500 is its strength. In the annealed condition, it behaves similarly to Monel 400. However, after age hardening, the yield strength can increase significantly, often exceeding 110 ksi (758 MPa). This high strength-to-weight ratio allows for the use of thinner plate sections in structural applications, potentially reducing overall weight and material costs without compromising safety factors. The alloy maintains these properties across a wide temperature range, from cryogenic conditions up to approximately 480°C.
3. Physical Characteristics
Monel K500 is non-magnetic in the annealed condition. Heat Treatment Conditions
The performance of the plate is dictated by its supply condition:
Condition A (Annealed): The material is supplied in a soft state. This condition offers maximum ductility and corrosion resistance but lower strength. It is ideal for applications requiring extensive forming or welding before final hardening.
Condition H (Age Hardened): The material has undergone precipitation hardening. This offers maximum strength and hardness. It is suitable for components that will not undergo significant cold working after delivery.
If the plate requires significant welding or forming post-delivery, Condition A is preferred, with age hardening performed after fabrication. If the component is machined from the plate with minimal deformation, Condition H may be more cost-effective.
