ASTM A790 UNS S31803 is a duplex stainless steel containing approximately 22% Cr, 5-6% Ni, 3% Mo, and trace amounts of N. 2205 stainless steel yield strength (≥450 MPa / 65 ksi) is nearly double that of 304/316 austenitic stainless steels.
S31803 pipe exhibits resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, with a pitting resistance equivalent (PREN) ≥ 33. Duplex 1.4462 is commonly employed in subsea pipelines, oil and gas transmission lines, heat exchanger tubes, and similar applications. Difference Between Uns S31803 And Uns S32205
S32205 is an enhanced version of S31803, with stricter control over C, P, S, and N, especially requiring a nitrogen content of ≥0.14%, making it more stable and corrosion-resistant.
A790 S31803 Seamless and Welded Pipe Fabrication
Seamless Pipe: Manufactured by piercing heated steel billets and then cold/hot rolling. It has a higher pressure-bearing capacity than welded pipe.
Welded Pipe: Made by rolling and welding steel plates or strips. After welding, it undergoes cold working and solution annealing heat treatment. Suitable for large-diameter applications. It is less expensive than seamless pipe.
Duplex 2205 Tube Welding
Strict control of welding heat input and interpass temperature is required. ER2209 rods or electrodes are recommended for stainless steel welding material.
