What Is 254 Smo Material?
254 SMO Stainless Steel Plate is a super austenitic stainless steel containing 6-6.5% molybdenum, hence also known as 6 moly. S31254 material exhibits exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride attack.

Additionally, its yield strength is nearly double that of conventional austenitic stainless steels. It is particularly suitable for marine engineering, chemical processing, and the oil and gas industries. SMO 254 is readily machinable into plates, sheets, and custom pipe fittings.

Alloy 254 SMO Plate Hot Working fabrication
Forging and upsetting can be performed at 982-1149°C (1800-2100°F).
SMO 254 Plate Annealing
Annealing should be performed at 1149-1204°C (2100-2200°F), followed by a water quench.
How To Weld Type 254 Smo Stainless Steel?

Use TIG (GTAW) for thin-walled sheets;
MIG (GMAW) is suitable for thicker plates;
Interpass temperature must be maintained below 150°C/302°F.
Select filler metal, such as AWS A5.14 ERNiCrMo-3 or equivalent material.
SS 254 SMO VS AL6XN
254 SMO has a higher molybdenum content (6-6.5% vs 6%), and 254 SMO performs well in seawater and neutral chloride environments. AL6XN offers superior corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid and high-temperature chloride environments. AL6XN is more expensive.
ALLOY 254 SMO VS 316
The corrosion resistance of 254 SMO is significantly higher than that of TP316.
254 SMO VS 904L
In sulfuric acid containing chloride ions, 254 SMO also exhibits superior corrosion resistance compared to 904L.
