317L Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S31703) is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel with greatly increased resistance to chemical attack as compared to the conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as Alloy 304. In addition, Alloy 317L offers higher creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength at elevated temperatures than conventional stainless steels. It is a low carbon or "L" grade which provides resistance to sensitization during welding and other thermal processes. The high molybdenum content ensures that it has a better resistance to overall and local corrosion for most media – such as sulfuric acid, acid chlorine and phosphoric acid. In strong oxidizing acids such as nitric acid, 317L stainless steel is susceptible to corrosion. Due to the lower carbon content, the welding performance of 317L ss pipe and the intergranular corrosion resistance performance at high temperature (427~816 °C) are better than 317 ss pipe. The Stainless Steel 317L Pipe has superior resistance against chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. These pipes have a good density of 8 gm/cm3 and can be elongated by at least 35% due to their excellent mechanical properties. Both the 317 and 317L Stainless Steel Pipe is designed with excellent strength and corrosion resistance.
